I was able to finish my antodrew fic for tomorrow, so that was a nice achievement of the day. It is rather short but I'm happy with how it turned out considering it's mostly for building up what's to come.

I'm not also thinking of which one to work on next. I'm thinking of the gregclair idea I mentioned here, as a Limbus fic should be next. But I'm also thinking of a dmnoir fic for one of the bingos, including a Lifeless Stars chapter. I haven't posted anything in that fic for almost a year (at the end of the month it will be a full year). I need to also work on 'Let me down slowly' as I'm midway through the chapter.

I spent some time this afternoon writing summaries of chapters for a longer fic that has been on my mind for a while. It's a haseli fic, it would have a total of 11 chapters if nothing changes from what I wrote down. I haven't done many longer fics and this one has a potential of being nice length while not as long as Lifeless Stars. I think it could work out if I actually write it down for once.

I also tired out AppFlowy. It's Notion but open source. They have a lot of similarities, and the advantage of being able to use it on Linux (which doesn't seem to be the case for Notion on PC. I haven't seen it there at all, though there probably is a workaround). I've never used these since they're promoted as the "productivity apps to get you to work more instead of doing other things like fun!" but I do need a way to track some of my stuff. This works on both my PC and phone so I can edit it if something needs a change. Will mostly use it for writing reasons, like ideas on the go and things like chapter plans.

I'm also realizing I'm at times not sure how to title my journals. I can leave them with no subject, but that's kinda boring. Right now I used a random emoji. Maybe I could use those when I'm struggling to title things?

Warning about possible end of non-Russian LiveJournal

Since I'm officially an old person of over 50 now and I know that there are a few other fancrones lurking around here who still maintain a LiveJournal, I want pass on a warning from [personal profile] armaina who passed on a link to a post by Dreamwidth co-owner Rahaeli/Denise on Bluesky:

https://bsky.app/profile/rahaeli.bsky.social/post/3mbebi2xfxc25

I haven't used LJ since it was sold to the Russians, but some of my fondest memories of online life date back to the hey-days of LJ, and sometimes I liked going back to check for any life-sign from people I knew way back when... It was so sad to watch its decline from afar, and based on Rahaeli's post on Bluesky it sounds likely that the end of non-Russian LJ lies ahead.

So if there's something on LJ you still want to save, or if there's someone on there you need to tell how to contact you elsewhere, do it now. And please pass on the warning.

Happy New Year!

For 2026,
I wish you and your loved ones, far and near,
health, happiness, and good luck.
May you find the way you are looking for,
or at least: may your GPS never leave you stranded.
May the winds of fate
only make you stumble, but never bring you down on your knees.
May the sun shine warm upon your face and melt away all shadows –
but not your ice-cream.
May the rain start falling
(soft or cold, in a drizzle or a down-pour)
only after you’ve reached your destination.
May you find friends
in unexpected places, and meet them again
and again and again
in health and happiness.
And throughout the year,
every month,
every week,
every day,
every night,
every hour,
every minute,
every second,
I wish for you
that whatever you believe in
(be it the power of the divine or the power of reason,
philosophical ideals, small dreams or really big visions)
may be a blessing for you,
and guide you and guard you.

Until 2027.

Book Log: Antara Sejarah dan Mitos

Another book from the back of the drawer, this one Antara Sejarah dan Mitos, which I got from a book fair ages ago and did not read because I felt ill-equipped to handle it. I'm still ill-equipped to handle it, but I have read it! As expected it's an academic text, by Prof. Emeritus Ahmat Adam, collecting a few essays he'd written that are critical of the use of Sejarah Melayu by other historians as a historical text, as opposed to a piece of literature that combines history with myth.

As a layperson it did take me a bit of effort to get through. I'm not even that familiar with Sejarah Melayu in itself! So I did learn some things along the way (like Melaka's diplomatic relationship with the Ryukyu islands), even if I could not appreciate the nitty gritty of Ahmat's criticism, a lot of which seems to come down to historians not translating the texts accurately (due to Jawi lettering and also by assuming the text is purely Malay instead of also using Sanskrit, ancient Javanese and other languages), not considering the different versions of the text tell a story in itself, and of not corroborating the text with other sources.

Ahmat has a particular bug bear about Hang Tuah, in arguing against the persistence of that name over the more accurate Hang Tuha or Hang Toh, and a near-angry argument against treating Tuah as a historical figure instead of a mythological one. I can't speak to his text-based arguments, but his major cultural argument is an old Malay belief I did not know about, which is the taboo of speaking and writing a person's real name. I assume it must have faded from practice during colonial times, but one of Ahmat's specific examples was that people would call someone by their relation to someone else, eg. "father of Mahmud", which is something my grandmother did, because she only ever called my grandfather as "father of [his eldest child's name]". Were those echoes of an earlier taboo, but no longer as sensitive in the era of romanized writing and documentation?

Ahmat continues to specify that Hang Tuah is clearly not someone's literal birth name, and from there his argument Hang Tuha was created as a literary Laksamana figure that symbolised the ideal over reality, like King Arthur I suppose, and that some of the references in the text using his name were akin to referring to a powerful man as "Caesar" or a generous folk hero "Robin Hood", i.e. they are not literally said figures, but the reference is made in order to highlight specific traits. And then he continues to demolish recent arguments of the discovery of Tuah's supposed tomb, and the non-critical inclusion of Tuah in historical tourism. Fun things! But a lot of it out of my wheelhouse.

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Looks like I get to talk about my dog a little. He's a Jack Russel Terrier, very hyperactive and does not know when to stop sometimes. They're hunting dogs so it makes sense that he'd be like this, but it can be a pain sometimes when you live in an apartment and have to take him out whenever he feels like it. It's also not helping that now when it's winter, it gets all snowy and rainy, so he has to shower every time he comes back home. He's not too fond of them at times and will bite if you do something he doesn't like (which can be anything, even something he previously didn't react to).

He's a good dog sometimes and very cute when asleep. He can nap a lot if walked well, but that would require 2-3 hour long walks if you want him to just drop down and sleep. As of recently he's been very cuddly, and likes being petted for long periods of time. He also has a fun habit of putting his paw against the arm of the person petting him, I assume to show affection towards the person that's petting him.

Photograph of a young Asian girl using a manual typewriter in an office and looking very serious as she stares straight into the camera. Her black hair is slicked into a low ponytail and her round glasses are so big they extend past her face. She's wearing a shirt and tie and an adult-sized yellow blazer that fits her like a dress, almost as if she has been shrunk. Text, in a typewriter font: Crack Treated Seriously, at Fancake.

The lunar halo of mackerel clouds, darkly dappled by the spaces between, keeps the moon from being reduced to just another circle of warm white light in the electric constellation of the apartment complex—which has usually been the effect when I’ve tried to take a picture. (That startling peacock-blue color was a happy artifact of my cheap-ass flip-phone camera!)

You can see how the moon continues an arc formed by the walkway lights—somewhat resembling the head of Scorpius, with the stairway light standing in for Antares.
