Schitt's Creek: Fifteen Hundred Miles, by MoreHuman

Fandom: Schitt's Creek
Pairings/Characters: David Rose/Patrick Brewer
Rating: Mature
Length: 30758 words, 2:56h podfic
Creator Links: written by [archiveofourown.org profile] MoreHuman, podfic available by [archiveofourown.org profile] Amanita_Fierce
Theme: Journey & Travel, Canon LGBTQ+ characters, AU

Summary:
It’s an attractive thought, that changing your life could be as easy as doing a hard thing.

Instead of moving to Schitt’s Creek, Patrick decides to hike fifteen hundred miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, through the wilderness, alone. He ends up meeting someone else with something to prove.

Reccer's Notes:
This someone, obviously, being David Rose. The story has them meeting while both solo-hiking the PCT and running into each other again and again. The "Journey and Travel" part is not just a backdrop for a different first meeting and getting together. Instead, the difficulties they face on their journey feel true to my experience of long distance hiking in spirit if not in detail, loving and awe-inspiring descriptions of the landscape included.

The fic also inspired a very well produced podfic that is 100% worth listening to if you like podfics.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, mild, and wet. It has varied between light rain, pouring rain, and "the air is water" outside. We need the rain, though.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any.

Poem: "A Spark in the Dark"

This poem came out of the May 2026 [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] siliconshaman. It also fills the "wait" square in my 5-1-26 card for the Greek Myth Fest bingo. This poem belongs to the Blueshift Troupers series.

Half-Price Sale in Polychrome Heroics

This week, the poetry of Polychrome Heroics is on sale for half price from Monday, May 18 through Sunday, May 24. This series is superhero fantasy. It features themes of heroism, coming of age, diversity, identity kink, family of choice, friendship, and cultural engineering. Sale prices range from $5 to $319, so hopefully there will be something for everyone.

Prices on open epics are locked at the time of opening; however, if anyone wants to donate to open epics and buy poetry, spending $100 will get you the quarter-price rate on the new poems, regardless of the rate on the open epic(s) you support. There are no open epics at present, so you may open one if you wish.

We are repeating the special discount for purchases of $100 or more, in which you get poetry at 25% of its original price instead of 50%. (Note that this increases the amount of poetry you get, rather than reducing the amount of money spent; the point is to get this stuff off of my desk. Yes, I can afford it.) That size of donation also makes you a k-fan which comes with some other perks, like a year-end collection of a poetic series. If several folks want to bundle their orders to make the $100 threshold and have one person send it all, that's okay; you'll get the discount and I'll list all your names as donors, but you'll have to decide amongst you who gets the k-fan credit. If you host a pool, please close it the day before the sale closes, so you have time to collect funds and turn them in on time.

Some of the poems are in sequence of related action, so in places there are prerequisites before a poem can be published. They can be sponsored at any time, just might have to wait for publication until something else gets posted first. Those are marked accordingly. I have also made lists of poems which unlock sequels, and poems which have prerequisites.

Linkback perk: The following poems have verses left to reveal. Boost the signal for this half-price sale and tell me which poem you want to extend.
"A Sense of Weather Changes"
"The Loving Embrace of Night"
"Generations of Cooks Past"
"Homefree and Clear "
"One Bite at a Time"
"Mishpocha"
"Changing Your Nature"
"Besa"

About characters and storylines: The storylines feature multiple characters, so if you want poems about ONE specific character, look closely. The thumbnail descriptions here give some indication who features in each poem. The storyline pages are adding precise, complete information about which characters appear in each poem. If you need more than what's already visible, you can ask me.

About timing: If you want maximum choice, shop early. We usually send a batch of things to my father near the end of a sale, and those poems will be posted as I have time.

About pools: Yes, you can combine your funds with other prompters to get the quarter-price rate. Yes, you can combine your funds with other prompters to buy a bigger poem. Yes, you can offer to match donations by other people. However, the wordsmith is not also a math whiz! After several attempts to find a way that I can work with pools and matches, I have concluded that this is over my head. (I did figure out how to avoid generating fractional pennies, though: all initial prices are now whole dollars, which means they cut evenly into halves and quarters.) So if you want to host a pool or a match, make a post for that in your blog or other venue, then comment here with what you're doing and include a link to wherever the discussion will be. You figure out the poems, you collect the funds, and when stuff is fully funded, you send me the money and the list of what it's for. Then I'll post the goodies. Please close the pool in time to collect donations by the end of the sale, so I can start posting pool poems no later than the day after the sale.

Before placing your order, please check this sale page to see what is still unsold! I will try to update the page as things sell, and it's likely to be the case that some poems will be marked SOLD before appearing in posts. People often buy things in batches, which means that selling gets ahead of posting. Also sometimes people ask for the same thing at the same time, so that not all overlaps are preventable. If you have alternate instructions in case you request something that has just sold, please include that in your message; otherwise I'll email you back and ask what you want to do.

Title: Sandsea Sealing
Artist: leecetheartist

Fandom: n/a
Characters/Pairings: n/a
Content Notes:
Every full moon, when the tide is right, all the Sandsea Sealings of a certain demeanor go to the display sands and wave their beautiful tails enticingly in the current, while trying to blow bubbles at precise intervals.

Sandsea Sealings are quite difficult to communicate with if you have not been properly introduced to the pod elders so while it's unclear to the layman as to why this group does this activity, those in the know just smile and encourage those who don't just to enjoy it.  Several of the non-displaying Sealings certainly form an apparently engrossed audience.

Sandsea Sealings are not considered 'true' merfolk by the uneducated because of their lack of 'true hands' but scientists tell us that they are definitely in the merfolk family and they certainly interact freely and in a friendly way to any merfolk of other species crossing their paths.

Designing Websites For Exploration

I've occasionally mentioned my fan websites on [community profile] smallweb check-in posts, but, now that I've got five of the things, I thought I might make an actual community post about them!

My websites are:

- Balamb Garden, about Final Fantasy VIII
- Silent Hill, about Silent Hill 2
- Kira's Tokyo, about Death Note
- Hope's Peak Academy, about Danganronpa
- The Website That Goes Wrong, about Mischief Theatre's Goes Wrong productions (e.g. The Play That Goes Wrong and The Goes Wrong Show)

For a long time, I thought I wasn't capable of making a website; I know very little about web design, and I couldn't work out how to structure it. And then I remembered a type of website I'd spend hours happily browsing when I was a kid at the turn of the millennium: websites that were designed to feel like you were exploring a physical space. Although these websites were structurally complex, they were often very visually simple, meaning I'd probably be able to create one even with my limited HTML skills.

When I gave it a go, I had a lot of fun making a website in this style! And... then I made four more, so it's possible I had too much fun.

If you take a look at any of my sites, I hope you enjoy them! And I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who has thoughts about 'exploring a physical space'/'choose-your-own-adventure' website design. Do you remember websites in this style; do you have one yourself; have you ever considered building one; is there anything you particularly like to see from this type of website, or any advice you'd give to someone who's interested in creating a website in this style?

art goals and areas to focus on improving

inspired by a post i saw talking about personal goals w hobbies and interests!
on my art to do list / idea list on notion, at the very top to the right of my commissions list, i have a reminder for myself that reads as follows:

Focus on Improving
  • Composition: i want my pieces to be more interesting, well put together, characters feel in place w the background, etc
  • Dynamic Poses: more dynamic poses, couple / interacting poses, etc
  • Backgrounds: actual scenes, whether detailed or blurred or partial, rather than just patterned / transparent

these are all goals i really want to work on! ...ive been having to do commissions to survive financially for quite some time now, which means i havent been able to experiment much with my art. HOWEVER ill be able to after i finish my last 2 bc theyre closed / waitlist until july or august now!
(dont get me wrong i love doing commissions, its just stressful when i have to do them specifically bc ive got $0 or less at the time)

since ill be free to do whatever, heres what ill be doing in order of priority:
  1. Artfight 2026
  2. Yaoi Game Jam 2026
  3. comic practice, aka learning my process more
  4. personal illustrations of whatever i want
  5. merch

artfight and personal illustrations in particular will allow me to experiment! tho AF i plan on mostly sketches, hopefully at least one (1) heart button tho! anyways, experimentation and studies help a LOT with artistic growth and honing skills. i have been improving ofc, but i will be dedicating time to working more on it!

now to break this down further...

Artfight Goals
  • 4 attacks minimum. preferably more, but you never know with my health
  • 1 heart button attack minimum
  • gift attacks to close friends and cool mutuals of course, but id like to find more strangers in particular this year
Yaoi Game Jam Goals
  • 3 expressions minimum per main / important character
  • 2 poses minimum for the couple
  • 1 CG minimum (itll be a kinetic VN, so no differing routes)
  • avoid overwhelming or overworking myself
Comic Goals
  • learn more about what i like, what i dont like, what works for me personally, and what i need to study more
  • try out "monochrome + spot color" as the coloring / finishing style (black, white, 2 or 3 greys, and one vibrant color to stand out)
  • finish a comic with at least 4 pages to start
  • dont be too ambitious with my first couple comic projects!! super short helps learn a LOT before taking on 20+ pages
Personal Illustrations Goals
  • be more self indulgent
  • draw beloved ocs more often (technomagic for one)
  • draw more selfship
  • incorporate "neglected" ocs in art more, whether polished or simple
Merch
  • prioritize "cheap and accessable" (ex. buttons, stickers, small clear acrylic charms, aka stuff that sells for cheap) over specialty merch (liquid charms, special acrylic charms, fabric products, aka stuff that sells for much more)
  • its okay to not do full sets all at once. i can always print a few designs then the rest later. saves money on acrylic charms too since MOQ is 20 w my manu
  • join a group order before the end of june, no matter how small my order is

i am. Getting sleepy. while trying to figure out how to close this off.... goo night

if you have any goals with your creative work / hobbies, please share in the comments!!
 id love to hear <3

"No Faster or Firmer Friendships" has 50 new verses. It belongs to Polychrome Heroics and needs $35 to be complete. Josué reads a funny poem to Maria-Vera.

The weather has been variable here. We got some rain the other day. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, a brown thrasher, a robin, a mourning dove, a gray catbird, and a fox squirrel. I saw a bobwhite quail in the savanna. :D I saw a ruby-throated hummingbird poking around the irises. I've heard the great horned owl but didn't see it. Currently blooming: pansies, violas, sweet alyssum, alliums, marigolds, honeysuckle, snapdragons, lantana, million bells, blue lobelia, petunias, portulaca, nemesia, wild chives, wood hyacinths, columbine, peonies, irises, mock orange, bergamot, Washington hawthorn, blackberries. Green fruit: raspberries. Pink fruit: mulberries.

+ Been super busy lately! Not with anything in particular, mind you, just odds and ends.

+ Took Friday off. Very glad I did. It's nice to have a 4-day weekend (Monday is a stat).

+ Managed to finish the draft for the fic I'm working on for Crack the WIP! ...Still need to do a lot of work mind you, but The End Is In Sight. For a while there I was totally hating this fic, but after putting it away for a month I'm at the "huh, it's not that bad" stage.

+ Worked on my FTH fic today. Not sure when it'll get finished but it's moving along. I'm starting to hope that Pru is becoming easier for me to write. If this story works out (which, well, it has to, because FTH) then I might, at some point, be able to finish the other fics I started with him and never finished. Until this point, he has always defeated me, that obnoxious bastard.

Longtime Friends

Last Monday and Tuesday I had visitors – my friends Jan and Ann from New Hampshire. I haven’t seen them in 20 years, plus or minus... They seem to have hardly changed, so they have done well for themselves. Their idea of retirement is way too busy/active as far as I’m concerned. They seem to have unpaid jobs – which they’ve chosen to do and like very much. I, on the other hand, am greedy with my time and energy. After 17 years of school and 47 years of working, I just want to do my own thing.

But they seem happy in all their activity. They are out West visiting friends and places in Oregon and Washington. I reserved Monday and Tuesday to chat with them – and have some fun activities and good food.

Economics

The Great GASB!

There are major flaws in the accounting standards that shape municipal finance in American cities. But there’s an opportunity too: a chance to comment on — and perhaps change — those standards going forward.

Using standards that only look at roads as “assets” and not as “liabilities" hides their true cost. We cannot sell this road asset to the next town over (consider this 2014 Strong Towns post). The standards merely ask for documentation of the infrastructure, but don’t account for the obligated burden of future replacement. We are watching the consequences of that decision unfold in plain sight. Let me be clear: these are standards not laws. Yet our municipalities are marching themselves off the fiscal cliff because the standards made them do it.
